EuroISME congratulates the winners of its annual competition for the best students’ thesis of the year 2021

The winners of the EuroISME Prize for the Best Student Thesis in Military Ethics for 2021 will be announced on 3rd June 2021 on the opening day of EuroISME’s annual conference.
1st Prize 2021
Surgeon Captain Richard Heames from the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom, with the thesis “What should informed consent in the military look like in relation to pharmacological enhancements?”, which was under the supervision of Prof. David Whetham.
The main objective of the author is to clearly define the principle of ‘informed consent’ concerning pharmacological enhancements and/or treatments in both a medical and a military context. The decision to take pharmacological substances is frequently not a decision of the soldier alone to make, but the use of such substances can also be ordered by the chain of command.

2nd Prize Winner
Major Kevin van Loon from the Netherlands Defence Academy, with the thesis ”Military Ethics Education for Royal Netherlands Army (candidate-) Officers. – A continuous Curriculum“, which was under the supervision of Dr. Peter Olsthoorn.
The author’s resilient and systematic work has resulted in a versatile picture of the instruction of ethics in practice in a military educational establishment and in an understanding of the aspects that contribute to the objectives and practices of that instruction. The picture of curricula involving the instruction of ethics and their implementation produced as an outcome of the thesis is not exactly a glossy picture.
